Built on the remains of a Roman city, Vaison shows off its rich heritage in the numerous ruins at the two archaeological sites of Puymin and La Vilasse, as well as the Roman bridge and the magnificently preserved ancient theatre. It is there that the Choralies, one of the most important song festivals in Europe, takes place, as does the Festival de Vaison every year in July and August.

From the medieval Old Town there is a lovely view of the hills in the distance. The ruins of the castle are in line with the statue of the Black Virgin, the two highest points of the town.
The Place Monfort is the liveliest spot in Vaison, with its beautiful fountain and its many bars and bistros in the shade of plane trees. Market day is Tuesday when the square is particularly busy, full of the colours and smells of Provence.
